Friday Musings: Slow Consumption
I was recently watching a commentary video about the hyper-consumption model regarding clothing, make-up and more. It can feel so tough to purchase items in a sustainable way. This is something I have been thinking about more and more while continuing to build my business. I love the slower way of living in general and the accompanying concept of taking a breather when making purchases. I am curious what others have found that works for them!
I know I have felt guilty for making impulse-style purchases in my own life. I love cute items even while I am mostly thrifting items or purchasing fair trade yoga pants for instance.
Slow consumption is a mindset that encourages individuals to take a more thoughtful approach to their purchasing decisions. Instead of buying things on impulse or out of habit, slow consumption advocates for a more deliberate and intentional shopping experience. It's about being mindful of the products we buy, where they come from, and their impact on the environment and society.
What does slow consumption look like irl?
One way to practice slow consumption is to adopt a "quality over quantity" mentality. Instead of buying cheap, disposable items that will need to be replaced frequently, invest in high-quality products that are built to last. This not only reduces waste but also saves you money in the long run.
Slow consumption is important because it encourages us to break free from the cycle of mindless consumerism. By being more intentional about our purchases, we can reduce waste, support ethical businesses, and cultivate a greater appreciation for the things we own - yay!
It's a way to shift our focus from quantity to quality and find more fulfillment in the things we choose to bring into our lives.
Italian Artisan gives a great list of features of this movement:
- Ethical Production: Adheres to ethical standards by ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions for workers. Production processes are designed to minimize waste and environmental impact.
- Local Manufacturing: Often involves local sourcing and production which reduces transportation emissions and supports local economies.
- Quality Materials: Uses high-quality, often organic or recycled materials. These materials are more durable and less harmful to the environment.
Embracing slow consumption is part of my on-going goals for a fulfilling and sustainable way of living.
So, the next time I am feeling tempted to make an impulse purchase, I will be working to take a moment to pause and consider whether it aligns with my values and needs.
