Why compostable packaging? - 8 Elephants by Molly

Why compostable packaging?

Why is compostable packaging becoming increasingly popular? And you may be wondering is it great or greenwashing??? Let's explore the reasons why businesses and consumers are making the switch to this eco-friendly alternative.

Our story:

We sifted through a list of tons of companies with a variety of compostable packaging before landing on our current packages. Because not all eco-friendly packaging is created equally we will continue to partner with companies to create our products with sustainable, non-toxic packaging!  And some, once in the environment, simply release more methane, which is a no-go in our world.

  • Our labels are hemp and recycled paper, too!
  • btw the occasional little crinkles in our packaging remind me of the cute wrinkles of an elephant's skin :)

Reduction of Plastic Waste

Compostable packaging offers a sustainable solution to the global plastic waste crisis. Traditional plastic packaging can take hundreds of years to decompose, leading to pollution in our oceans and landfills. In contrast, compostable packaging breaks down into organic matter, reducing the environmental impact significantly.

Lower Carbon Footprint

Compostable packaging is often made from renewable resources such as plant-based materials like cornstarch or sugarcane. These materials require less energy to produce compared to traditional plastic, resulting in a lower carbon footprint. By choosing compostable packaging, businesses can reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to a healthier planet.

Support for Circular Economy

Compostable packaging aligns with the principles of a circular economy, where resources are kept in use for as long as possible. After use, compostable packaging can be returned to the earth through composting, enriching the soil and closing the loop in the production cycle. This sustainable approach minimizes waste and promotes a more efficient use of resources.

Biodegradability (the right kind)

Unlike traditional plastics that break down into harmful microplastics, compostable packaging biodegrades naturally without releasing toxic chemicals. This process supports soil health and microbial activity, creating a positive impact on the environment. By choosing compostable packaging, businesses can contribute to healthier ecosystems and reduce the risk of plastic pollution.

Consumer Preference

With growing awareness of environmental issues, consumers are increasingly seeking sustainable products and packaging options. Businesses that offer compostable packaging demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and appeal to eco-conscious consumers. By meeting consumer preferences, companies can enhance their brand reputation and attract a loyal customer base.

In conclusion, the shift towards compostable packaging is driven by its numerous environmental benefits, including waste reduction, lower carbon footprint, support for a circular economy, biodegradability, and consumer preference. By choosing compostable packaging, businesses can play a vital role in protecting the planet and promoting a more sustainable future. 💚💚💚
